Safe Staffing News – A Collaboration

By February 9, 2016Uncategorized
I am Janie Garner, the founder of Show Me Your Stethoscope.  We are a 700,000 member strong nursing group on Facebook. We are collaborating with two established nursing organizations, A Voice For Nurses Now, and Nurses for National Patient Ratios, to begin the grassroots movement toward safe staffing.  safe staffing
If you ask a nurse what their biggest problem at work is, it will not be their salary, their benefits, or their schedule.  It will be their impossible patient load, and their fears that their best will not be good enough to deliver safe, timely care to their deserving patients, many of whom are critically ill. It is estimated that medical errors permanently injure or kill 440,000 people in the US alone every year.  Can you imagine what that total is worldwide? And worse, can you imagine how many medical errors go unreported based on fear of reprisal and the shame of hurting another human being?
The fact is, Safe Staffing Saves Lives.  This is a mantra to nurses, because we know it is the only way to lower the risk of errors and neglect that endanger our patients daily.  We want to be the nurses who are able to listen to our patients when they need to talk. We want to have time to thoroughly assess our patients and catch their deteriorating condition before it is too late. And quite frankly, we do these things better when we have meal and bathroom breaks.  You would think that these things are guaranteed in 2016, but they are not.  Not in nursing.
We want our patients to get the care they deserve.  Their very lives depend on it.
We cannot do it alone.
We must get every nurse in the country involved with this movement. We must demand safe staffing for our patients.
We have organized and scheduled a Rally For National Nurse-To-Patient Ratios on May 12, 2016 in our Nation’s Capital. We would like to have simultaneous Rallies in as many State Capitals as possible for those who cannot travel to Washington DC. We need to get the public involved, and encourage them to come out and support us. They should care about the staffing level in their local hospitals. The Nurse Staffing Standards for Patient Safety and Quality Care Act of 2015 (H.R.1602) – introduced by Rep Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) has been recently introduced to Congress. This is what we must come out to support.
You are a nursing organization who has the power to join with us and encourage your members to take part in a movement that can change their patient’s lives. The nurses on the front lines are with us; my question for you is if you will support the profession of nursing, or if your organization’s goals are more important than the patients we serve.
We look forward to hearing from you, as allies in nursing, and advocates for our patients. #Nurses4Change2016
