SMYS is adopting families again for the Holidays. Families are nominated and are members of SMYS who need assistance giving their kids Christmas this year. Take a look at their stories and help us make their holidays a little brighter. Many of these families had us in tears reading about their situation- families whose kids did not have ANY Christmas last year, Nurses who were hospitalized and lost their jobs, homes…everything. These are families just like us, working hard to provide for their families.

THIS is what Show Me Your Stethoscope does.

Family # 5 Wishlist

Good morning and Happy Friday!! Here is family #5 for #SMYSHoliday! Andrea Pelligrino is a single mom of 3 and recently graduated from an accelerated nursing program that prevented her from working during school. She recently took her boards and did not pass and is preparing to take them again. Without us her kids won’t have a Christmas this year. So let’s give her kids a great Christmas and wish her luck on retaking boards!!!

Nurse Childrens Foundation PJ Drive: Link

This year, SMYS has teamed up with the Nurse’s Children’s Foundation based out of California. This is an amazing group. It was founded by a woman named Leslie Silket. This group helps take care of children that have lost parents, one of which was a healthcare worker. Every year, they collect clothes and toys for children that would not otherwise have a Christmas. They even dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus and deliver presents to the children in the shelters on Christmas morning (which will be live streamed this year from their page!). We are doing a pajama drive for them through Target. Here is the link. If you click on it, it will take you to the target homepage. Click on lists and registries and search for either Leslie Silket or first name SMYS last name Holiday. The pajamas are also an additional 20% off today if you enter code SLEEP20 at checkout. We tried to pick sets of 2 which means 2 kids will be helped out with your one donation. If you would like more information about this group, I will be posting the link to their page in the comments. Show these kids some love!!

Search Registry/Lists for Leslie Silket or (First name) SMYS,   Last Name (Holiday)

Code for extra 20% off Pajamas (ends 12/3) is SLEEP20, also if you have a Red Card, you get an additional 5% off your order. If you are interested in signing up for a Red Card click Here

Family #4 Completed!!! Yay!

Here is family #4 for #SMYSHoliday. Alison McDonald Is described by her coworkers as an amazing CNA that works in Missouri. SHe is the mother of 3 young children ages 5 years, 19 months, and 2 months. However, she makes next to nothing and had to go back to work only 3 weeks after giving birth to her youngest child. Money is so tight the kids are not going to have Christmas without your help. And they are just adorable!!!! Want to see…. I may have put a picture in the comments!!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

Family #3 Angela Smith  Completed!

Family number 3 is a young 11 year old girl. Dad was abusive and Mom left. Dad ended up with a DUI and recently got out of jail. Because of his behavior, Mom ended up needing extensive legal help which depleted her savings and is still ongoing. Combine that with therapy for her daughter and money is just not there. She is doing everything she can to make ends meet and keep the lights on. Her daughter will not have Christmas without your help. So please, let’s show this beautiful and brilliant little girl that we love her!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

Family #2: Completed!!!!

I want to tell you the story of 7 year old Blair. Blair was diagnosed with B-ALL in March. She has already undergone multiple bone marrow biopsies, spinal taps, and chemo. After 4 weeks of treatment, she was not in remission. She is now having to do more intense chemo and will be for a while. Mom had to quit her job as a nurse to take Blair to doctors appointments and hospital stays. Blair also has a 6 year old sister named Norah. We included some gift cards for the family to use during their travels to hospitals.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

Family #1: Completed!

Our first family has asked to remain anonymous so we are going to call her Florence Nightingale (mainly because I was joking with her and she didn’t think I would actually name her that) She is a RN case manager who took a different job that would allow her to spend more time with her 6 year old daughter (absolute cutie!!). Unfortunately, after the costs of advancing her degree and a divorce, she ended up in debt. She had to sell her house and move in with her mother and take a second job to make ends meet. It is a situation that could happen to any one of us. Let’s give little miss a great Christmas this year!!

This is what Nurses do – Alex’s Sunshine fund – #NursesUnite

By | Good Works | One Comment

A Nurse you probably know from around Show Me Your Stethoscope was fired for refusing to take an unsafe assignment.  Actually, she was allowed to ‘resign’.  How would you like to take care of 43 Long Term Care residents, most of which were 2+ assists, all by yourself?Nursing-Home-Staffing

Yeah, me neither.  So she was out of a job for a few weeks.

She is a single mother with no savings account.  One paycheck from poverty.  But for the grace of God go I.  When I was a single mother I often felt helpless, and scared.  I constantly feared what would happen to my life, and my baby if I got sick or hurt.  I was literally one paycheck from poverty.  If I was ill, how would I take care of my beautiful Alex? It haunted me.  Luckily, I had family support in my parents and sisters, and nothing awful ever happened.  Except that one time that Alex sprayed Clorox Cleanup over my open contact lens case and I simultaneously burned the cornea epithelium in both of my eyes.

But that is for another day, and he was only four so we won’t blame him.1465166_10205434744253504_7538822156219905559_n

And this nurse was going to lose all of her utilities, and her new job in home care because her license plates expired last week. She has a small child.  He is her entire world.

So because you donated your hard-earned money to Alex’s Sunshine Fund, we were able to give this mom and nurse a few hundred dollars that will prevent her child from going without electricity and water.  It will allow her to keep her job, and resume her most important responsibility – providing for her little boy.

Alex was killed in 2011 at the age of 17 by a distracted driver. It was horrible, and violent.  He was terrified and in pain when he died.  If I am honest, I still spend every single day trying to live through this. Honoring my son in this way is the greatest gift the members of SMYS have ever given me.

It is a small amount of money, but it meant the world to her. It would have meant a lot to Alex to be able to help this family.

Please continue to donate to Alex’s Sunshine Fund by clicking here. The original post about the fund can be read here.

Thank you for everything.

Love,

Alex’s Mom884591_10200989480644692_152753694_o

Baby Ryan and his untimely death

By | end of life, Good Works | 3 Comments

When #NursesUnite, beautiful things happen.

In March I received a message from a #ShowMeYourStethoscope member about a very sick little boy. Ryan LaSource had been fighting cancer for most of his young life. At 3 years old he had leukemia with 3 relapses. (Four total)  He developed Graft vs Host. His skin was so painful that he could only wear bamboo cloth.

Naturally, the thought of this baby being in pain for the lack of a few (somewhat expensive) pieces of clothing made me ill. I wrote a blog and included a wish list. SMYS read this blog ( http://wp.me/p79tAf-Qk ) and jumped in to help. Ryan soon had the clothes he needed.

Ryan died todaybabyryan

However, Ryan died in his comfortable clothes, which were purchased with your love. Thank you for making this baby’s last months more comfortable. Thank you for being part of the SMYS community.

We will send flowers from you to Ryan’s parents, who have begun a long, dark journey without him. I am well-acquainted with this path, myself and hoped that they would never join me on it.

Love,

Janie

Baby Jude

By | Good Works | 3 Comments

A guest Post by Jennifer Lombardi Story

Hello, SMYS. Today, I would like to introduce you to Baby Jude.

jude

You may have seen posts on the page asking for prayers and well wishes for this little one. This is Paul Pendleton, also known as Baby Jude. He was born on November 25, 2015 at 38w5d weighing in at 6lbs and measuring 18.5in. By all accounts, he was early, but healthy. But for parents Jake and Samantha, that would change after 8 days. At that time, he went into respiratory distress and was taken to their local hospital. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and respiratory acidosis and transferred to Children’s Hospital of Birmingham and placed on life support. He finally was discharged on December 30, after being intubated twice, RSV, a collapsed lung, and necrotizing enterocolitis requiring TPN. He ended up being admitted 2 more times, only for short amounts of time. Things were going well, until March 12. At that time, he was again taken to his local ER for respiratory distress and transferred to Birmingham. He stopped breathing shortly after arrival and was intubated. He was taken of the ventilator at one point for less than 24 hours. His little lungs just could not tolerate it. So what was wrong with Baby Jude? Why couldn’t he tolerate being taken off the vent? What was causing the respiratory distress to begin with? That answer would come on March 31, after a bronchoscopy. Baby Jude was diagnosed with tracheomalacia.

So what is tracheomalacia? Tracheomalacia in a newborn occurs when the cartilage in the windpipe has not developed properly. Instead of being rigid, the walls of the trachea are floppy. Because the windpipe is the main airway, breathing difficulties begin soon after birth. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and may include: Breathing noises that may change with position and improve during sleep. Breathing problems that get worse with coughing, crying, feeding, or upper respiratory infections (such as cold). High-pitched breathing. Rattling or noisy breaths. (source: www.nlm.nih.gov).

Baby Jude was finally able to be taken of the ventilator on April 2, but continued to need support via BiPAP, but that only lasted 2 days. He was once again intubated and his lung collapsed. His doctors said the only treatment option they had available for him was to give him a tracheostomy until age 2. Dad Jake, a RN, knew there had to be other options available for his son. He and mom, Samantha starting researching different facilities that may have more options for Baby Jude. They found one at Boston Children’s. After a few hiccups in arrangements, he was finally flown to Boston on April 9.

We had been following this story for a while as it was posted on the page as a prayer request. After he was transferred to Boston, I paid them a visit and brought them a care package from Show Me Your Stethoscope’s members. My heart absolutely melted when I saw his little face. I was fortunate when I got there, he was awake and alert. He held my finger and I couldn’t help but smile. This little man is precious! No wonder he has a whole town rallying around him back home in Alabama. And now, he has another 680,000 people on our page pulling for him.

His current situation- he is still on the vent and has been since his last intubation on the 4th. He just had a bronchoscopy a couple of days ago which revealed severe collapse of his airways as well as a major artery compressed against his trachea. On Tuesday, April 25th, he will be taken to the operating room at 7:30am to undergo 2 major procedures at the same time. One, to open up his airways by securing them to the surrounding structures. Two, reroute the artery compressed on his trachea to its proper position. He needs your thoughts and prayers now, more than ever. His parents do, too.

So that’s the story of little Baby Jude. Hopefully, surgery will go well  and he will not require ventilation support for much longer, let alone until he is a toddler. Boston Children’s is one of the best in the country with some of the best doctors on staff. He is in good hands. If you would like to follow Baby Jude’s story yourself, you can go to his facebook page: Prayers for Baby Jude. sharethecare1https://www.facebook.com/prayersforpauljude/?fref=ts

One more thing to note- the kindness of strangers is a beautiful thing. While on the train, care package in hand- a big metal bucket type thing filled with fresh fruit for mom and dad, Pats and Red Sox gear for Baby Jude, and gift cards for places around town (thank you to all who donate to the SMYS foundation). The Mickey Mouse balloon I had tied on the handle caught the attention of 2 little children, a boy and a girl. Mom asked me where I was going, so I told her. She proceeded to take $20 out of her wallet, had her children give it kisses and put it in the bucket to give to Jake and Samantha. I got a lump in my throat. I do not know this person, she has requested to remain anonymous. But, she is a wonderful person. Shout out to her and her children!
