SMYS is adopting families again for the Holidays. Families are nominated and are members of SMYS who need assistance giving their kids Christmas this year. Take a look at their stories and help us make their holidays a little brighter. Many of these families had us in tears reading about their situation- families whose kids did not have ANY Christmas last year, Nurses who were hospitalized and lost their jobs, homes…everything. These are families just like us, working hard to provide for their families.

THIS is what Show Me Your Stethoscope does.

Family # 5 Wishlist

Good morning and Happy Friday!! Here is family #5 for #SMYSHoliday! Andrea Pelligrino is a single mom of 3 and recently graduated from an accelerated nursing program that prevented her from working during school. She recently took her boards and did not pass and is preparing to take them again. Without us her kids won’t have a Christmas this year. So let’s give her kids a great Christmas and wish her luck on retaking boards!!!

Nurse Childrens Foundation PJ Drive: Link

This year, SMYS has teamed up with the Nurse’s Children’s Foundation based out of California. This is an amazing group. It was founded by a woman named Leslie Silket. This group helps take care of children that have lost parents, one of which was a healthcare worker. Every year, they collect clothes and toys for children that would not otherwise have a Christmas. They even dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus and deliver presents to the children in the shelters on Christmas morning (which will be live streamed this year from their page!). We are doing a pajama drive for them through Target. Here is the link. If you click on it, it will take you to the target homepage. Click on lists and registries and search for either Leslie Silket or first name SMYS last name Holiday. The pajamas are also an additional 20% off today if you enter code SLEEP20 at checkout. We tried to pick sets of 2 which means 2 kids will be helped out with your one donation. If you would like more information about this group, I will be posting the link to their page in the comments. Show these kids some love!!

Search Registry/Lists for Leslie Silket or (First name) SMYS,   Last Name (Holiday)

Code for extra 20% off Pajamas (ends 12/3) is SLEEP20, also if you have a Red Card, you get an additional 5% off your order. If you are interested in signing up for a Red Card click Here

Family #4 Completed!!! Yay!

Here is family #4 for #SMYSHoliday. Alison McDonald Is described by her coworkers as an amazing CNA that works in Missouri. SHe is the mother of 3 young children ages 5 years, 19 months, and 2 months. However, she makes next to nothing and had to go back to work only 3 weeks after giving birth to her youngest child. Money is so tight the kids are not going to have Christmas without your help. And they are just adorable!!!! Want to see…. I may have put a picture in the comments!!

Family #3 Angela Smith  Completed!

Family number 3 is a young 11 year old girl. Dad was abusive and Mom left. Dad ended up with a DUI and recently got out of jail. Because of his behavior, Mom ended up needing extensive legal help which depleted her savings and is still ongoing. Combine that with therapy for her daughter and money is just not there. She is doing everything she can to make ends meet and keep the lights on. Her daughter will not have Christmas without your help. So please, let’s show this beautiful and brilliant little girl that we love her!

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

Family #2: Completed!!!!

I want to tell you the story of 7 year old Blair. Blair was diagnosed with B-ALL in March. She has already undergone multiple bone marrow biopsies, spinal taps, and chemo. After 4 weeks of treatment, she was not in remission. She is now having to do more intense chemo and will be for a while. Mom had to quit her job as a nurse to take Blair to doctors appointments and hospital stays. Blair also has a 6 year old sister named Norah. We included some gift cards for the family to use during their travels to hospitals.

Family #1: Completed!

Our first family has asked to remain anonymous so we are going to call her Florence Nightingale (mainly because I was joking with her and she didn’t think I would actually name her that) She is a RN case manager who took a different job that would allow her to spend more time with her 6 year old daughter (absolute cutie!!). Unfortunately, after the costs of advancing her degree and a divorce, she ended up in debt. She had to sell her house and move in with her mother and take a second job to make ends meet. It is a situation that could happen to any one of us. Let’s give little miss a great Christmas this year!!

The rare perfect shot (in Golf and Health Care)

By | Blog | No Comments

By Mark Davis

Golf is a peculiar game. No matter how badly you play on any given round, there’s always that one beautiful, perfect shot that keeps you coming back for more. EMS is the same way. My golf game is by no means on par with Phil Michelson or golfBubba Watson, but I love getting out on the course with some good friends and having a good time. Similarly, I don’t count myself among the “Paragods” of our local EMS scene, and we have many, but I do consider myself a solid EMT, and the bond with fellow EMS, Fire and Law Enforcement brothers and sisters is amazing. Just as I relish the moment I strap my clubs to the back of a golf cart and head for the first tee box, I enjoy racing to the scene of a call knowing that the people I will be working alongside and trusting with my back are among the very best in the business.

In the game of golf, it is critical to know the right club to use in the various fairways hazards and greens. Likewise, it is critical to know the correct equipment and drugs to use to treat a patient.

I remember the first birdie I scored. I still have the ball. I also remember my first CPR, although I have no souveParamedics loading patient into ambulancenirs other than the mental images. It was a 19 year old female who had been transported to the ER with an asthma attack. Her condition deteriorated to the point that she coded. When the Code Blue was called, my partner and I happened to be heading back out to the truck after dropping off another patient, so we jumped in for manpower. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at that patient, but never could get her back. I still remember the Latin Kings gang tattoo on her chest. Those things stick with you.

But just like the good golf shots we make, so we also celebrate our saves. I remember the approach shot I made with a wedge that left the club face perfectly, hit the green exactly in the right spot, and rolled to the right, tracking gracefully into the hole as my buddies whooped and hollered. One of them commented that it was the best shot he’d seen since he attended the Masters in Augusta five years earlier. Likewise, I remember the code we ran on a middle-aged male who worked at a car wash and had a MI. The teamwork and smoothness of that call was phenomenal, and that man walked out of the hospital 3 days later.

emt_after_a_very_long_shiftOf course, the fun and camaraderie doesn’t end after the 18th hole. After the round of golf, friends gather for food, cold beverages and to talk about the game. Just as we interact with our partners in the ER, handing over patient care to the Doctors, nurses and techs who will continue to care for the patients we bring.

There are good times, bad times and great times. If only we in the medical field could have mulligans.

Every nurse encounters poop. Like, lots of poop. And this, friends, is a poop story.

Pt. was admitted to the Medical ICU for a series of TIA’s; he had already suffered multiple strokes before this admission, and resided in an assisted living home. He was not as well tended as he should have been there, and that trend followed him here. I normally work in the CVU, but because our unit was short on patients (“low census,” for the uninitiated), I “floated” to MICU and took care of Patient. I took him from Odessa, another CVU nurse, who had received him from Jimmy, my partner in crime. In his entire admission, he had not once been cared for by any of the native nurses. My guess is that the charge nurse, Heidi, didn’t think we were up to the usual medical disasters present on the MICU (her words to me: “Well, we don’t want to give you anything too hard.” Wow, you’re right, I’m probably stupid. Fuck you too, lady.) Hence, Patient was being handed to the floats because he wasn’t challenging or sexy enough. Whatever. For once, I knew I would get a lunch.

We had a good day, and yes, it was easy to care for him; I felt badly for the regular staff on the unit because they were working unbelievably hard compared to what I was doing. Toward the end of the shift, I received news that Patient was being returned to his facility. I went in to share the news with him that everyone thought he was stable enough to go home. Before I got a single word out, he stared at me dolefully and moaned, “You know, my stomach is just killing me.” I immediately stopped and gave his belly a listen, then pushed on it a bit…damn. It was kind of firm, more so than when I had assessed him previously. I asked him if he felt like he needed to poop, and if he had been passing gas lately. He was bed-bound, so I wasn’t too surprised that no one knew the last time the poor bastard had gotten the pleasure of unloading.

I took a deep breath. Of course, it was 1800, and I was supposed to be preparing his transfer paperwork. But damn it, a man’s gotta move the mail sometimes. Apparently, 1800 with transport en route was that time.

I explained disimpaction to him. He didn’t care, he just said “please, just help me.”

Gloves. A heavy duty chuck (which is a really absorbent pad…sort of a “pee pee pad” for people). Wipes. Surgilube. A garbage can. It was on.

I asked him to try one more time to push on his own. I may be the Brown Queen, but that doesn’t mean I want to wedge my fingers in anyone’s ass. He was unsuccessful, grunting and sweating and groaning all the way.

GO TIME!

I started working on the dry matter. Some poop made its way. Then…he started pushing again.

We had busted the dam.

I had never seen anything like it, and I haven’t since. It was HUGE. The size of a small baby. I am not exaggerating. I was immediately angry that no one at his home had even noticed that he hadn’t notably crapped recently, but relieved I caught it…so to speak. Technically, it had actually landed on the chuck. At least there was no cord to cut.

Another nurse had noticed at this point that I hadn’t been out of the room for a while and came to check on me. Her head popped around the privacy curtain. “Are you okay in here?”, she asked. “Yeah, I’m fine, but I could use a hand getting my friend here cleaned up.” My voice was calm, but I was jerking my head back to urge her to LOOKIT THIS GIANT DOOKER, OMG. She came around the bed to where I was, frowning…and then she saw. Her eyes got big, but in her best nursing voice: “Sure, I’d love to help you. Are you doing all right, sir?”

Honestly, we sound like airline stewardesses in turbulence.

God. Patient was so happy. I’d swear his grips even improved on his weaker, affected side. He said “thank you so much” at least four times in the time it took me to clean up and wash my hands.

After we got Patient situated, did I do my paperwork? Did I call report to his home? Nope. I texted Jimmy.

“didn’t you have the guy in room X yest?”
“yep, why? is he ok?”
“i just disimpacted him”, then
“omfg, it was like a sequoia log”

Patient went home a new man.
