The Flint Water Crisis
The Flint, MI water crisis was a convergence of bad policy, bad infrastructure, and bad science.
Who paid for it? The residents of Flint—many of them children. The members of SMYS saw the how dire the situation was, as well as the endangerment that the residents faced from their tainted water supply; as a result, #NursesUnited together and donated water and formula to the community.
An example of water sourced from the Flint River vs. Detroit water. Anti-corrosive treatment was not added to water, leading to a corrosion and subsequent release of lead in water pipes in Flint, Mi. Lead poisoning can lead to a host of long-term health problems in children, including behavioral issues and lowered IQ.
