High Pressure Sales and SMYS

By | Uncategorized | 4 Comments

Ok, I know I am a high pressure kind of admin.   It is almost like I want to get everything done immediately.  This is not far off, I am afraid.  I feel like I have been waiting my entire life to do good.  When you go from being a poor old nurse to a nurse with 700,000 friends, you start dreaming big.

sweet

My dreams are ridiculous at this point, and they all involve YOU.  We are going to provide scholarships, adopt families, unite nursing, save the world, cure cancer, go on a medical mission, and colonize Venus.  By tax time.

Ok…..maybe a little slower.

Today I got about 10 messages about the Amazon links being thrown around.  At least 4 of them used one word.  ‘monetization’ .  I get that you guys only have to show up here and chat, but a large portion of our members actually want to do good for others.  A larger portion want to make their mark on nursing.  A small but passionate group will do anything they can to further nursing as a profession, and increase the respect and autonomy we deserve.

Guess what group I belong to?

I want to help people go to nursing school, become certified as a CNA, and maybe complete their RN-BSN.  You guys have made it pretty clear that you don’t want to buy shirts or other junk, and you have no desire to pay a buck each for a lifetime membership to a members only website.  I was shocked, but I respect your decision.  We made more money for nebulizers for kids in Bangladesh in an hour than we made on the SMYS go fund me in 2 months. <I find that acceptable, of course>

We have had a hard time gaining support from large businesses.  Littmann dangled a carrot and then stopped returning our calls.

So the Amazon program.   There will be a bunch of Amazon links in the next month at least, because it is a huge shopping time.  There is an opportunity for us to do things that will further our mission.  You already shop on Amazon, so no harm no foul.  Scroll if it is bothersome. Everytime a bell rings at Amazon, we get a few pennies toward our fund.  In aggregate, this will help. I need to help people, because it is good for my soul…..and maybe this one little thing is all about me.

Love,

Janie

Living well is the best revenge

YOU GUYS BUY A LOT OF FREAKING STETHOSCOPES!

Littmann Lightweight That’s the link for the rest of you addicts.

Seriously, I was looking this AM and you guys needed Stethoscopes! You also like electronics and toys!

We will make a little money on this, and hopefully the ‘Doctor’s Stethoscope we were all so incensed about will help send people to school for Nursing, BSN Completion, CNA, etc.  So keep heading to amazon via our general link to do your shopping. SMYS Link

As They say….Living well is the best revenge.

In our case, we want more education so our patients live well…. Nearly 300 million people living well is the most awesome thing I can come up with.

Love,

Janie

Babies should live 100 years – My Kryptonite

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

This has been a landmark week at Show Me Your Stethoscope.  I feel like we have done some tangible things, are planning some tangible things, and really put our mission where our mouth is. 🙂

Of course, we have rules.  And I follow those rules. Except when we plan a special event.  I refuse to make my members wade through 30 Go Fund Me posts to get to the good stuff.krypto

What you may or may not know about me, is that I lost a child almost 5 years ago.  Even hard-ass Janie has her kryptonite.  I want to tell you a story.

Baby Jackson was born on 11/8/2015 in rural Louisiana.  His mama suffered a uterine rupture while in labor.  Despite heroic efforts, Jackson was born with massive and irreversible brain damage.  He lived on a vent for 20 days.

His mother survived the delivery.

Jackson never became conscious.  He never smiled for his mama.  He never cooed, he never snuggled.  I am sick for this family.  I never know if having a child for 17 years and losing him is worse or better than losing a child essentially at birth.

It gets worse.  Can you believe it gets worse?

The area where Jackson was born is so poor and rural that the local funeral home cannot even afford to give the customary free funeral for babies.  So they cannot bury him.  I called the funeral home and verified this. Talk about cynical

So, if you can….. five dollars. Don’t buy me a christmas present, whatever. Miss a cup of Starbucks.  I don’t know.  I have no right to ask you to do any of that.  But I remember the day my child died, and I am pretty sure I could not have handled being unable to pay his final expenses.

Ok, it’s true.  I am not as big and bad as I thought I was.  But I didn’t post a Go Fund Me on the page.  So there.

Love,

Janie

Happy Thanksgiving

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Dear SMYS:

Tomorrow you will celebrate Thanksgiving with your families or your co workers. You will spend time in a relaxed and joyous atmosphere, and perhaps comfort the sick and the dying. You are valuable. The world knows that it could not turn without nurses to heal their loved ones.

This year I believe was a landmark one for Nursing. A ridiculous comment from a talk show host about a lovely nurse with a great story united us against the world. Nowhere else has there EVER been a group of healthcare providers this large. At no other time has there been an opportunity for unity like the one we have created together, in this place.

We have had growing pains aplenty. We have had to fight spam wars, LPN V ADN V BSN wars, and vaccine wars. Getting our members to sign a petition has been difficult. Raising money for scholarships has proven difficult. Essentially, it has all been difficult.

I wouldn’t change a moment of it.

Ok, except for the yacht incident. Or maybe the Hitler incident. I really cannot decide.

Thank you friends, for being here and discussing the world of healthcare with your peers. We are going to change nursing for the better. We will have more offers like the Kaplan deal. We are working on fundraising in different ways to help you perhaps finish that ADN-BSN or get certified as a CNA. We will work on improving your workplace on a state and national level. This will take time, and we will need your help to do it. Changes are coming, but we think they are for the better.

Essentially, I am thankful for you. Happy Thanksgiving.

We are ‪#‎nursesUnite‬. We are ‪#‎showmeyourstethoscope‬.

Love,

Janie Harvey Garner
